Muzzy

MUZZY

Hello everyone! Have you ever hear about Muzzy? THIS IS MY CHILDHOOD!!! Today I’m going to dedicate my blog to him and his friends. I hope you will like them.

As you already know, a second language builds a bridge to another culture and opens the door to new friendships and adventures. We have to guide and follow our students through these paths and show them how fun could it be.

Muzzy is an animated greenish-blue extraterrestrial who loves eating clocks. He goes to Gondoland, where all the adventures take place. In the kingdom there are the King Nigel, a lion; Queen Erza, a rat; Princess Sylvia, a poodle; Bob the gardener, a mouse; and Corvax, the evil scientist, a goblin.

With them, the kids will learn a lot of English structures and vocabulary!

Here I attach the first lesson, so you can get familiarized with the characters: Muzzy

Muzzy was created by the BBC in 1986. Muzzy is known for millions of children. It was a movie“Muzzy in Gondoland” that was divided into different lessons. In each lessons the characters follow the same structures of the sentences, they repeat a lot the keywords and give different examples. It is very visual way to practice listening, speaking and readying at the same time. Which CLIL methodology you will use in order to reinforce the knowledge?

In my opinion, using TV programs as a tool is very important because the generations nowadays have an amazingly big visual memory. Of course it is not enough. We have to work the knowledge in the classroom, working more in the vocabulary and structures that appear in the TV lesson or, in the opposite way, we can use the video after learning the contents in class, to show students how to put the knowledge learnt in a meaningful context.
How would you work with this TV series?  What do you think about using TV series as a tool?

  1. I can´t believe!! This is so familiar for me!!! I have leart with Muzzy. I think that almost all my English learning life could be reduced into Muzzy and Arthur. I don´t know if you know, but Muzzy has also books and other material, not only the TV chapters. They all together make the best cuple. I harly think that I will use them if I have the chance. I think TV series can be a good tool to learn English provided they are used with good judgment.
Thanks for making me remember so good times of my childhood

  2. As Sara said, Muzzy is soo familiar to me as well! ( In spite I am older than you hahaha ;)) I used to watch Muzzy in an academy. In fact, my teacher always tried to put a small part in each class. Also, she tried to connect the content we had in books to the serie. For example, I still remember the opposites (big/small and bad/good) and some grammatical structures. According to CLIL methodology, if we focus the attention on the scaffolding to learn, we could idenfity modelling in any grammatical structure. I would like to share this video about Muzzy, What do you think? Thank you for your ideas! :)

  3. I just have to thank you Leticia! You made me smile! :D I used to watch this serie, moreover I have lots of books with comics and exercises to do at the same time that you are watching the chapters of the serie. It was a present from my parents when my brother and I were children, we passed a lot of time watchin Muzzy,. For us, he was the best character, very funny and friendly, and we always laughed with him.

Of course I think TV series are useful and they can be used in class, is a different way to teach, and to make the students learn and understand better. Because, in the case of Muzzy, you have fun while you learn about grammar, vocabulary, expressions and so on. In my opinion, this way is easier to obtain the knowledge. When I became teacher I will use TV series, films, programms and everything that I think proper and innovative for children and for education.

Thank you again, Leticia, and congrats for your blog, is really nice. ;)

  4. Hi Leti! =)

Who has not heard about Muzzy?
Muzzy was the most used resource for our teachers when we were young. During the course, teachers took us twice a month to see movies about Muzzy. It was a lovely green alien who ate watches.

As Muzzy films, we can find lots of movies and series highly recommended to learn English. Using television as a tool for learning the English language has many advantages, for example:

    - Words, phrases and grammatical structures often repeat themselves in a TV series.

    - Television programs offer one way to pick up conversational skills and new words.

    - The act of watching television has the potential to assist you to improve your English.

    - Television can be an invaluable tool to help students, it develops their speaking skills

In conclusion I really agree with you Leticia and with your point of view related with the tv programmes as a useful tool to learn English.
